CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

The Redeemer looked out onto the crystalline lake, its waters reflecting a blanket of silver moonlight. A very beautiful image that would make a wonderful backdrop for bloody liberation.

There was a car up ahead. The license plate was the same one from the message. There was no doubt that the person inside was the one who demanded salvation tonight. Unlike the rest stop fools, there wasn’t another soul in sight here. That made an easy job even easier.

The window rolled down before the two even came close to one another.

“Well hello, mister. You must be David,” the Redeemer said.

Not the man’s real name, of course. They never used their real names. There was a great irony at play in this game. Most people went to great lengths to keep their personal information safe and discreet. They would use fake names, make up fabricated stories about their lives and jobs and families. Yet, when the intimacy began, they were quick to bare their entire souls. There was nothing rawer than sex, yet these desperate men still favored anonymity in every other aspect of their engagements.

Sad, pathetic, lamentable.

Just another reason why they had to die.

“Yes I am,” the man said. “I’m David.”

He stuttered when he spoke his own name. The Redeemer had to do everything to not giggle. “Sure you are. You gonna let a honey in or what?”

David lent over and pushed open the passenger side door. Within two seconds, they were a cat’s whisker apart from one another.

“It’s a beautiful night, isn’t it?”

“Sure is,” David said, his hands on the wheel even though the engine was cut. Maybe it was a masculine thing. God knows the others had their weird quirks too. “Look, this whole thing is new to me. Alright?”

“Relax, sweetness. It’s not as hard as you think. Not once you get going, anyway.”

“Yeah. That’s what they tell me.”

David turned around and presented himself. His hands began to wander until he caught a handful of thigh. Gently at first, then he dug his fingers in.

“It’s no different than playing sports or taking pills. No attachment. Physical release. I’m just here to make you feel good.”

David’s pointy lips turned into a smile. His hands ventured further up his new partner’s body. “Excellent. I’ve got a few buddies who do this all the time. They told me I had try it at least once.”

“Did they now?”

“Sure did. They said it really helps take the edge off. Much better than sex with their wives, apparently.”

A knot tied in the Redeemer’s stomach. Bile began to stir. Were sex workers just pieces of meat to these people? Nothing but a walking hole with no emotions of their own? Another reason, the Redeemer thought. Men like this had to learn the hard way.

“And where’s your wife tonight?”

David’s fluid caresses suddenly turned rigid. He looked his one-time lover in the eyes then glanced back downward.

“Oh,” David realized. “I mentioned her in my email. Sorry. Nerves are making me forgetful.”

The Redeemer let David continue his gentle strokes, now loosening up again.
